The act of getting a massage can be absolutely lovely. While the massage therapist has a lot to do with your experience, it's also up to you to approach massage the right way. If you follow the tips below, you will get more out of your massage experience.

1. Schedule the massage when you will be more relaxed.

Massage is very relaxing and rejuvenating, but you want to schedule your session at a time when you can afford to feel relaxed and rejuvenated. For instance, you don't want to schedule a massage right before a big meeting at work. You'll probably be sitting there thinking about the meeting throughout your massage, rather than relaxing and enjoying the experience. Instead, schedule your massage for the end of the day or on the weekend when you can really sit back, breathe, and enjoy the experience.

2. Talk to your massage therapist.

Everyone likes something a bit different when it comes to massage. For instance, some people like more pressure, while others enjoy a lighter touch. Do not be afraid to voice your preferences to your massage therapist. If the music playing is making it hard for you to focus, let them know. If you can't stand the scent of lavender and they reach for the lavender oil, tell them. Your therapist wants this to be an enjoyable experience for you, so they will welcome the feedback.

3. Note where you are sore.

For most people, massages are about addressing certain sore muscles. Massage therapists will be better able to customize your treatment if you tell them where you are sore. You can also share some information as to why you are sore in those areas. For example, if you are a builder and lift a lot of heavy materials, tell them -- they will then understand why they need to focus more on your shoulders and back.

4. Turn off your phone.

Before the massage begins, turn off your phone. Don't just put it on vibrate -- you will still hear it make noises! With your phone off, you are free to relax and you won't be disturbed by people emailing and texting you. For the full experience, leave your phone off for an hour or two after the massage to let the effects of the massage really linger and set in.

By using the tips above, your massage will be more enjoyable.
